music

im putting together a playlist for my trip out of the northwest and want to make one about the northwest.  Unfortunately I cant think of many songs that mention the Northwest.  Do you know of any songs that talk about the northwest or oregon?

so far I have:
Portland, Oregon – Loretta Lynn & Jack White
Rexroths Daughter – Greg Brown

any and all suggestions are much appreciated.

This week was full full full of shows. On wednesday night i went to see !!! (chk chk chk). They were amazing. There were a couple of other bands that played as well. Colin and I danced and danced all night long. The show got over around 2. I got home around 330 and didnt pass out until about 5. It was so much fun.

Last night I went to see Explosions in the Sky. That was phenomenal. Eluvium opened the show and Colin and I got there late and only caught the last song of his set. But Explosions were amazing. They played all old songs. I was happy for that as i havnt had time yet to absorb their new album and I was afraid that I would not recognize what they played if they played new things.

It was a new experience to go to shows sober. The last couple of shows I have been sober. I had a couple of drinks at !!! but was hardly buzzed and had a wonderful time. Last night Colin and I had a beer before we left for the show but a can of pabst wouldnt give a nun a buzz. Its neat because rather than being fucked up at a show im sober, i can appreciate it more and can remember what songs they played. It might sound weird but I had a lot of fun.

There is legislation out right now to raise the royalties paid by internet radio sites.  This makes them higher than other forms of broadcast.  Visit this site to help save internet radio.  If this passes sites like pandora and lastfm will not be able to exist anymore.

im sitting here doing homework, talking with Ben and listening to the new explosions album.  I bought it when i was down in LA but havnt had a chance to sit and absorb it yet.  And while i wish that i could say that i was blow away by it, im not.  Now dont get me wrong its a great album, and shows considerable growth from the band  it just doesnt hold up to ‘The earth is not a cold dead place’.  Its hard to beat a masterpiece.  But ‘All of a sudden i miss everyone’ is a great piece of art.

Ive been sick for the last couple of days.  Really really sick.  I didnt leave bed from monday night until this afternoon.  Two solid days of bed rest.  And now im feeling a bit better.  Enough to get out of bed, do some homework and the dishes.  Tomorrow comes house cleaning and laundry in preparation for my  parents and sisters visit this weekend.  They arnt staying here, well haley is, but i still want the place to look nice for when they come to see it.
Colleen called today and it sounds like shes got the same cold.  I feel sorry for her but know what shes going though.

Now its time to take some Nyquil and go back to bed.

a little side fact: did you know that the word ‘Realtor’ is trademarked and always has to be capitalized.  look at the billboards, it had a little tm next to it.

Hustler

This video is so fucking hot!!!

Last night I went and saw ‘Do Make Say Think’. They are an instrumental post rock band. Much like explosions or mono. They were wonderful. The night started out with the idea that I was going to go to this poetry reading that Ben was reading at but last minute got an invite from Trent and Colin to go to this show, so i went. On the way to the show i stopped off at the Sandy Hut with ben to meet some friends. Alison was there and wasnt too excited about the poetry reading either so she came to the show with me. We had a great time. She is my new show buddy.

After the show i walked Alison home and was at that point half way to my house so i decided to walk the rest of they way. Man am I tired today. As it turns out it was about 45 blocks total from the show to my house. It only took me about an hour and it was warm and not rainy so it gave me a lot of time to think and enjoy the weather.

i just finished ‘the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy’ again.  I absolutely love that book.  I think its the 5th time ive read it.  This was the quickest read at just under a week.  ‘The restaurant at the end of the universe’ is next.  Ive read half of that but never got around to finishing it.

Tonight was really nice.  I have no clue where Ben is, and no one has called or stopped by, and for once i enjoy it.  I have just sat in front of the computer listening to music, watching movies, watching TV, and reading.  This is the kind of night i needed.  It seems like all that I ever do is go out and drink, or have people over and we drink.  Now, dont get me wrong, i love drinking, but there comes days where you just dont want to do that.  And when i suggest a calm night at home for friends just to come over and watch a movie sober, or play a board game, they end up going to the bar.  If i need to do this stuff, i will just do it on my own.  Im loving the independence that living here has given me.  A night like this would have been a lot different had i been in medford.

I think im gonna go rearrange my room, and do a little pre spring cleaning.  Its still relatively early, and my classes were canceled due to teacher emergencies that both fell on the same day.  Cant beat that, its as good as a snow day, but without being trapped inside.

ps if you have ever followed my music recommendations and listened to explosion in the sky and liked it.  Check out the band Mono.  They are very very similar, but sometimes include strings.  They still have a distinct sound but still different.  there is also ‘this will destroy you’.  all along the same vein.  Check it out

Cracked red brick walls. Those walls that are not brick are painted blood red. The only thing that lights your table are dim red light, giving you the feeling as though Lucifer himself were in the room. A local rock cover band does amazing renditions of all of your favorite rock songs, done to a T. But their vocalist is a very hopeful ameatur singer, reaching towards the flames of stardom.

This is ‘Karaoke from HELL!!!’. Every Monday night Dantes has a live band to sing karaoke with. It is just like being at a real concert. There are no awkward off key indie kids, or drunken old people that just like to sing to make you feel better about your own voice. These people become rock stars for 4 minutes.

I was the DD last night and still had a really really good time. Dantes is an amazing venue, and the concept of live karaoke is even more amazing.

last night I went out to a little club in NE called the Tonic.  They were having a couple of bands play.  The first one was good, but i was still warming up to the place and dont remember too much of it.  The second, and best band, were all from Tokyo.  And they did not speak any english.  They played a indie punk kinda thing.  It was good, but straight 4/4 and predictable, but still good.  The third band was a screamo band but the lead singer had a lot of energy and emotion.  I enjoyed it.
I also got to hang out with Luke from medford.  He lives up here now and we both met up yesterday.  He has a cool place downtown.

My trip to LA is happening and its only about a month away.  I am so excited about it.  so so so excited.  And in may is Sasquatch, and im planning to go to that as well.  If anyone wants to attend sasquatch with me let me know.  Share a camping spot and what not.  The line up there is amazing.

This is one of my favorite poems.  It is by Ellis Paul.  He is an amazing folk singer whos lyrics are so powerful and descriptive it will make your knees buckle and you will hit your head on the edge of the sink falling, waking up hours later to his voice and that oh so familiar acoustic guitar still ringing in your ears.

Love’s Too Familiar A Word

I stepped into the room late last night
because late is the time I keep
you were sleeping warm as coal
in a pocket of comfort and white sheets

but you don’t startle anymore when I step into the room
though the hour is later than midnight
and neither window can place a moon.

“I missed you,” you say
and it sounds like a promise
when whispered half asleep
your skin still damp with sweat
from thoughts your dreams refused to keep

I follow my memory to a switch on a light
“Shut your eyes” my voice cut short
when darkness turns bright

“Do you love me?” you say
but love is too familiar a word
for in this bed 10,000 times a phrase already heard
but, “Yes, I love you” speaks my reply
though I know I failed myself and you for not
matching how I feel with words of higher wealth

I know its lonely in the world tonight
because here is more than what’s deserved
and the imbalance can’t be summed in black and white
cause “love’s” too familiar a word.
